5 Key Concepts
Apply the 5 key concepts to your film trailer, poster and magazine poster
Audience:
Our film trailer will be mainly aimed at male but also could be a few females. This is because most crime and action films are aimed at men because men prefer the action scenes and violence within the film, whereas woman tend to prefer romantic or romcom films. However there may be a few woman that watch our film because they might be different and they might like the crime genre, but this would be very few if any. They will be aged between 16 and 30, we have decided to aim our film at this age group because this again is stereotypical for the action and crime genre. They will probably be single because they will have more of a disposable income and will therefore be able to afford to pay the cinema prices and this is what will help us to sell our film. Our target audience will also have some form of either part time or full time job because this will then allow them to be able to afford the cinema prices to be able to watch our film.
Our film can be linked to the uses and gratifications theory because the main reason that the audience will watch our film is for entertainment because we have left our trailer on a cliff hanger so hopefully this will then encourage the audience to go to the cinema to then watch our film. Our audience will hopefully enjoy the tension that we have created within our trailer, they may also choose to enjoy the violence and action scenes that our film contains because this is what men tend to enjoy more. The personal identity or personal relationships part of this theory will most likely play no part in this because it is near on impossible for our narrative to happen in real life.
Media Language:
The main media language aspect we have included within our film is voyeurism. We have included this because it makes the audience feel that they shouldn't be seeing. This can be seen in our film trailer at the start when the "Mi5" board and documents are shown, the audience know they shouldn't be seeing this and this is where the voyeurism comes into.
Mise-En-Scene:
The main locations that we have chosen to base our film in is a busy, town centre. We have chosen this because along with our narrative of the agents going on the hunt for the girl, we can then include near misses between the agents, the young girl and agent blake. We have chosen to do this because it builds tension for the audience. We have also used low key lighting to make our trailer more realistic because after research we also found that this was also in most action trailer. Another reason we have chosen this is because it emphasises the fact that the mood of the film will be quite low, because most of the film includes violent scenes. The costumes we have also chosen for our characters are casual clothing, with the agents being in shirts and dark trousers with a casual jacket over the top. We have chosen this for them because they are undercover and as a result their identity should be hidden.
Genre:
We have 2 main genres for our film trailer and crime and action. This is because the memory stick going missing and all the "Mi5" parts in the film would come under the crime section whereas the chase scenes and the fighting would come under the action genre. Todorov said that "a new genre is always a transformation of one or several old genres" This has made our film hard to put into a genre because the narrative can be put into more than one category. Both of the genres we have chosen would fit in with the overall target audience for our film, meaning it applies to males as they are more interested in crime than females. Our trailer follows this convention because our main character is male, like many other action films.
Narrative:
Our trailer follows Vladimir Propp's narrative theory. This was that each film has 7 character types. The way that we have attempted to follow this theory is by trying to include as many of these character types as we could into our film trailer. The main character types that we have included are the hero, villian and someone that needs saving, these are also the types that appear in every action film. The hero for our film would be agent Blake because he has to take the girl on the run in order to protect her for the 2 government agents that want the memory stick. The villians would be the 2 agents that want the memory stick off of the girl, and the person that needs saving would be the girl that finds the memory stick before Agent Blake finds her.
Barthes action and enigma code could also come into our film because the action code would be that the memory stick ha gone missing and people need to locate it and get it back to the government. Whereas the enigma code would be whether the memory stick gets back to the government or not.
Representation:
In our film we use most of the stereotypical conventions that appear in action and crime films. This can be seen with our main character being male, this is also used in other action films because males are known as having more power and being stronger than woman. We have also used fast paced music in our trailer which is also another stereotypical convention as fast paced music also adds to the tension of the film along with emphasising the genre of the film. Weapons are also another big convention in action films and we have also included this in our film in order to make it look as realistic as possible for our audience.
